Costa Rica warmly welcomes visitors and is a relatively safe country with a stable and functioning democracy as well as the most cosmopolitan capital in Central America. Take the same precautions you would use traveling anywhere. Making a few common preparations and reading the following Costa Rica safety tips will increase your chances of have a safe and stress free stay:
• Protect your valuables; don’t leave cameras or other possessions in view in your car or laying around.
• Do not carry large amounts of cash.
• Carry a copy of your identification with you at all times. Foreigners should have their passport stored away safely and carry a photocopy of it.
• Remember to store or make copies of all other important documents such as airline tickets and traveler’s checks.
• Stay on marked trails when hiking. If a trail looks too dangerous, turn around and go back. Heed warning signs.
• Be prepared for weather changes as you travel through different altitudes. The beaches are warm year round, but the mountains can be quite cool. Wear layers and have rain gear, especially during the months of July-December (green season).
• Familiarize yourself with local traffic rules. In most of Costa Rica, the speed limit is 60kph. Turning right on red lights is permitted.
